Choosing a garter snake diet can be tricky, as they can have a tendency to be picky eaters. There are many misconceptions and fears associated with what garter snakes can and cannot eat, or for the picky ones, what they will or will not eat! However, feeding garter snakes does not need to evoke panic into owners, it can be quite simple.
Garter snakes thrive on a varied diet to ensure complete nutrition. While fish, earthworms, frogs and toads offer a healthy diet for your snake, mice represent complete nutrition. Although frozen feeders are not viewed as a “natural” component of the garter snakes diet, due to their ease of hunting fish or toads, the nutritional value of mice far surpasses that of their “natural” counterparts. Training your garter snake to eat mice can be as simple as rubbing the scent onto an earthworm and making the switch from there!
A good rule to keep in mind is to never feed live mice to a garter snake. Using frozen mice is much safer for your snake; just be sure to thaw it out before offering it. When using frozen mice, you are not required to feed your garter as often, and they will likely grow bigger much faster due to the nutritive value.
