  • Popular Choice: Fruit Flies (Drosophila hydei) are a great choice for frogs, spiders, lizards, other small reptiles and amphibians.
  • Variety of Options:
    • Species & Size: Two species available:
      • Drosophila melanogaster – approximately the size of a pinhead cricket.
      • Drosophila hydei – approximately 1/8 inch in size.
    • Count: Three options including:
      • Vial (Contains 50 – 100 flies)
      • Jar (Contains 250+ flies)
      • Culture Kit (Contains 250+ flies and additional supplies to help start a colony)
  • Care & Maintenance: Our flightless fruit flies will keep reproducing for up to five weeks, during which multiple generations will emerge. During the first few days, keep at least half of the flies in the container to support reproduction.

Keeping fruit flies (Drosophila hydei) with different feeder insects can be tricky and is generally not recommended. You should use separate containers tailored to each insect species.

How should I care for fruit flies (Drosophila hydei)?

Fruit flies (Drosophila hydei) are best stored at room temperature with lid in place. Each jar will contain approximately 250 adult fruit flies with their food and water source in the jar. When cared for properly the flightless fruit flies will continue to reproduce for multiple generations. When dispensing fruit flies into animal enclosures, we recommend leaving 50% of the flies in the jar so reproduction can continue. Drosophila melanogaster fruit flies reproduce much quicker than their Drosophila hydei counterparts.
