Keeping fruit flies (Drosophila melanogaster) with different feeder insects can be tricky and is generally not recommended. You should use separate containers tailored to each insect species.
Fruit flies (Drosophila melanogaster) are best stored at room temperature with the foam plug in place. Each vial will contain approximately 50-100 adult fruit flies with their food and water source in the vial. When cared for properly the flightless fruit flies will continue to reproduce for multiple generations. When dispensing fruit flies into animal enclosures, we recommend leaving 50% of the flies in the vials so reproduction can continue. Drosophila melanogaster fruit flies reproduce much quicker than their Drosophila hydei counterparts.
