  • Tip: When choosing a Live Food item for your pet, pick an item that’s smaller in width than the animal’s mouth.
  • Nutritional Enhancement: Your animal’s diet should be further enriched by incorporating waxworms for extra fat and hornworms for additional moisture.

Frequently Asked Questions 7 Questions Answered
Are Calciworms a good food item for my pet?

Calciworms (Hermeia illucens) are the larvae of the black soldier fly.  They are naturally high in calcium making them an ideal live feeder solution for calcium supplementation in reptiles and other insectivores. Calciworms should be considered a supplemental food item in addition to a cricket, superworm, hornworm and mealworm diet.

What do you feed your Calciworms?

We feed our Calciworms (Hermeia  illucens), a scientifically formulated diet specifically designed to enhance the health and quality of all the insects in our colony.

Can I store Calciworms with different feeder insects?

Keeping Calciworms (Hermeia illucens) with different feeder insects can be tricky and is generally not recommended. You should use separate containers tailored to each insect species.

My CalciWorms are dark or black, does that mean they are dead?

Calciworms are generally a creamy white grub but turn darker and even black the closer they get to pupating. Black Calciworms are not dead. Customers often mistake black Calciworms for dead ones because of their experience with waxworms.

How should I care for Calciworms?

Calciworms (Hermeia illucens) are packed in a moist bedding that serves as their food source. Calciworms can be stored in the refrigerator between 42F and 55F. Over time, as the food is consumed and becomes drier, Calciworms will slowly regress in size. It’s important to note that Calciworms turn black the closer they become to pupating, this does not mean they are dead. Calciworms are also quite content at room temperature, but produce an unappealing waste smell like ammonia. Refrigerating slows their metabolism, limiting their waste generation. We recommend customers remove Calciworms from the refrigerator and allow them to warm up before feeding.  Once warm they will become much more active and attractive to hunting reptiles.

It is our recommendation to use all your Calciworms within 3-4 weeks of their pack date.
